Food
The feeding regime for the cows is extremely important and we work with Lely and other experts on altering the nutritional content to maximise benefit for the cows. The farm crop stategy is related to the food required and we currently grow 600 acres of grass and 900 acres of cereals.
Cows eat 4 kg of alkalage (our special mix of wholecrop) and 35 kg of silage. 45 kg in total of feed a day, and drink a lot - roughly a bath tub (20 gallons) full of water a day.
The calves also have an automatic feeder which has also been accepted readily by the younger stock. These units recognise the calves and ensure delivery of the correct amount of feed when they approach the bucket to feed.
The average internal body temperature of a cow is 102 degrees Fahrenheit and the blood temperature is 105, so if we are feeding very young calves then we heat the calves milk up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
